Benefit Programs and Exemptions


Blind Persons

Before October 1st of the assessment year

If you are blind and meet the criteria listed below, as of the assessment date, you will be eligible for a property tax exemption in the amount of $3000.

  • Be a Connecticut Resident
  • The record owner of the property
  • Proof of blindness according to the state’s definition
  • Physician’s note

Elderly and Totally Disabled Homeowners

February 1st – May 15th

If you or your spouse are at least 65 years of age, or totally disabled through social security and your income is not above the limits listed below, you will qualify for a tax break.

State Option Benefit:

Single Person: $46,300 income limit

Married Couple: $56,500 income limit

Local Option Benefit:

Single Person: $46,300 income limit

Married Couple: $56,500 income limit

What you need to apply:

  • Income Tax Return from the prior year (if filed)
  • 1099 Social Security Statements for yourself and your spouse
  • All 1099 statements from all income (if you do not file)
  • Proof of rental income
  • Lottery winnings

Totally Disabled Persons

Before October 1st of the assessment year

If you are totally disabled and meet the criteria listed below, as of the assessment date, you will be eligible for a property tax exemption, in the amount of $1000.00

  • Be a Connecticut Resident
  • The record owner of the property
  • Receiving permanent total disability benefits from Social Security Administration
  • Completed Application
Proof:
  • Social Security Disability Reward Letter
  • 1099 Social Security Statement
